Reading Activities

Need a break from reading? Or just looking for something to do on a lazy afternoon? Try one of these activities. (These activities only need four things at the most; a book, sometimes a computer, sometimes a pen and sometimes some paper)

  • Random Poetry: Pick up your book (it needs to be one you have read before) and turn to a random page. Close your eyes and put your finger somewhere on the page. Open your eyes and write down the word your finger is on. Do that until you have ten to fifteen different words. Now write a poem, (it doesn't have to rhyme) using all of these words. You could also write a short story doing the same thing.
  • Translation: (This activity requires one of the Artemis Fowl books). You will see along the bottom of all the pages there's some Gnommish symbols. Ask mum or dad to print out this translator sheet and set to work translating the symbols. Once you're used to the symbols, you can even start writing secrets in them so no one knows what you're writing.
  • Air machine: (This activity requires you have read Airman). Connor makes a wonderful flying machine. Have a go at designing, and maybe even making (get mum and dad's permission first) your own. Read descriptions of Connor's machine then think about all the things you would add to your dream machine. Remember to write labels on all the parts so you know what they do and how it works.
  • A Letter: You obviously know how amazing reading books is (hehehe) but do you know someone that isn't convinced? Does your best friend hate reading at school? Is your cousin sick of the books they've read? Write a letter to someone you know telling them a bit about a book you've just read, or are reading. Try to convince them to read it too, that way you'll have something else to talk about next time you see them. You could even write a letter to your teacher during the school holidays and tell them about what you're reading.
  • Book Club: Talk to your friends or the kids at school, and your parents too, about organising a book club. You can agree to meet once a month or so, and all read the same book for that month. You get together and talk about the book and then decide on a new book to read for next month. You can read books that are all by the same author, or you can read ones that are about the same things, or you can read whatever books you want to.
